As a business grows, its IT infrastructure usually grows with it. More applications, more data and more users eventually put pressure on the existing setup.
At some point, adding another rack or upgrading the cooling system might not be enough. Maybe there isn’t enough space, the power capacity is limited or expanding the room would mean major changes to the building.
So what would you do in that situation?
Expanding the existing server room might be the easiest option if the space and infrastructure allow it. But a prefabricated data center could be worth considering when a business needs a separate, purpose-built environment without going through a conventional construction project.
Of course, the right choice depends on the actual requirements. Costs, deployment time, power and cooling capacity and future expansion all need to be considered.
I’m curious how other IT professionals approach this decision.
Would you expand an existing server room or consider a prefabricated data center instead? What would be the biggest factor behind your decision?
